Funny Kid Get Licked MAT T S TANTON
From Australian author–illustrator Matt Stanton comes the fourth book in the hold-your-belly- hilarious Funny Kid series! Following on from major global successes, Funny Kid Get Licked sees Max and the gang put their talents towards saving animals, putting the fun in fundraising, launching a puppy- smuggling operation, fighting the great Redhill canteen war and planning a secret theme park in this brand-new adventure! On releasing his middle-grade debut, both in Australia and overseas, Stanton says, ‘I created Funny Kid based on the belief that not all children say they love to read, but every kid loves to laugh. The feedback from Funny Kid for President has been overwhelming — kids who said they hated reading devour the book and email me to demand the next one. ‘I firmly believe that if you create books for kids, and not to please anyone else, then kids respond. This has been one of the most thrilling experiences of my life and I’m not about to stop now!’ Perfect for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Tom Gates , Funny Kid Get Licked is guaranteed to leave readers (mums and dads included) crying with laughter and begging for more. With more than half a million books sold, Stanton is well known for co-creating the much-loved Fart Monster picture book and emerging readers series with Tim Miller, and he also publishes the Books That Drive Kids Crazy series with his wife, Beck Stanton.

Lady Helen and the Dark Days Deceit A L I SON GOODMAN
The Last Dingo Summer JACK I E F R E NCH
Set against a background of glittering Regency society, this thrilling finale to the Lady Helen trilogy hurtles to a shocking conclusion full of passion, betrayal and heartbreak.
From one of Australia’s most beloved storytellers comes the next tale in the sweeping Matilda Saga. Jackie French continues to captivate vast audiences with her gutsy Australian heroines and their journeys — with soaring moments of love and courage in the face of wounds old and new. A body has been found in the burned-out wreckage of the church at Gibber’s Creek — with older skeletons lying beneath it.
Bath, December 1812
After the shocking events in London and Brighton, Lady Helen and Lord Carlston are now the newly forged Grand Reclaimer, a
dyad of power bonded through blood and death. They cannot, however, yet control this terrifying new force between them. They and their Dark Days cohort have taken up residence in Bath, looking for the Deceiver who can give them the key to wielding their power and help them find their nemesis: the Grand Deceiver. Helen and Carlston are not only struggling to control their new dyad power. They must also contain their illicit feelings for one another as Helen prepares to marry the devoted Duke of Selburn. The wedding, to be attended by the Queen, is fast approaching and Helen must juggle her imminent life as Duchess with the dangerous and unseemly duties of a Grand Reclaimer. When an old enemy arrives in Bath, bringing death and deceit, the final confrontation between Grand Reclaimer and Grand Deceiver is set into terrifying motion. Can Helen and Carlston finally unleash the power and love between them to save mankind from annihilation?
The body is identified as that of Ignatius Mervyn, the man who attempted to kill Jed Kelly and her unborn child. Newcomer Fish Johnstone is drawn into the murder investigation, convinced that the local police are on the wrong track with their enquiries. But as she digs beneath the warm and welcoming surface of the Gibber’s Creek community, more secrets emerge.
And Fish must also face her own mystery — the sudden appearance and then disappearance of her father, a Vietnamese refugee she never knew.
Children’s | December 2018
Set during the Indigenous rights and ‘boat people’ controversies of the late 1970s, this haunting story shows how love and kindness can create the courage to face the past.

A page-turning story of courage and determination in the face of the unknown
Year 2471.
A new discovery. Those three words thrill my parents — the galaxy’s leading archaeologists — but, for me, it means another time jump to a different planet. By the time we arrive, my friends will be older than my dad, and I will still be 17. Thanks, Einstein.
Fiction | December 2018
For Sarah and her husband, Heath, the chance to teach at Odell seems like the best thing that ever happened to their small family — a chance to rise through the ranks and put the past behind them.
I really can’t blame Einstein, though. No one expected to find life-sized terracotta warriors buried on other planets. So off we go to investigate, travelling through space and time. With my social life in ruins, I fill my days illegally worming into the quantum net — the invention that allows us to travel in space. Of course, the only person close to my age is a hot-but-pain- in-the-neck security officer who threatens to throw me into the brig. But when one of the warrior planets goes silent, we have bigger problems on our hands. The planet’s entire population might be dead. And now my worming skills, along with a translation of an ancient alien artefact, might be the key to finding out why. But my attempts to uncover the truth lead to the discovery of a deadly new alien phenomenon, and also alert those who wish to keep it quiet. The galaxy is in real danger and time is not on our side …
Until one dark night ends in murder.
But who’s guilty and who’s telling the truth? And who’s been in on it all along ... ?

The Widow of Ballarat DARRY F RAS E R
A compulsively readable story of passion, adventure and a woman’s quest for independence set against the colourful backdrop of nineteenth-century Bendigo and the goldfields of Ballarat 1854, Ballarat, Victoria: When Nell Amberton’s husband is shot dead by a bushranger, there are few who grieve his passing, and Nell least of all. How could she miss the monster who had abused her from the day they wed — the man who had already killed his first wife? But his death triggers a chain of events that seem to revolve around the handsome bushranger who murdered him — a man to whom Nell, against her better judgement, is drawn. But Nell has far more than a mysterious stranger to worry about. With a mess of complications around her late husband’s will, a vicious scoundrel of a father trying to sell her off in matrimony and angry relatives pursuing her for her husband’s gold, she is more concerned with trying to ensure her safety and that of her friend, goldfields laundry woman Flora, than dealing with the kind of feelings that led her astray so catastrophically before. After the violence on the goldfields, Nell’s fate also hangs in the balance. It seems that, after all, she might need to do the one thing she has avoided at all costs … ask for the help of a man. Rich in historical detail, this novel is set during the events of the Eureka Stockade, and it offers glimpses of the breathtaking landscape of country Victoria and real insight into the life of nineteenth-century Australia.
Fiction | December 2018
For Darry Fraser, writing is her journey and the Australian landscape — rural, coastal and desert — is her home and hearth. History, hidden catalysts and powerful connections between humans drive her stories. Well-developed characters and layered stories woven with passion denote her love of telling a great tale. Darry is a daughter, a sister and an aunty. She loves animals, especially dogs, and walks her beloved Dog every day. She is left-handed, has an extreme fondness for plain-flavoured potato chips and fresh liquorice, and loves a bold berry-flavoured red wine (not necessarily at the same time).

Hazards of Time Travel JOYC E CAROL OAT E S
From the Ashes D E BOR AH CHA L L I NOR
A captivating story of family and friendship through one decade of incredible change
In 1950s Auckland, things are changing — and fast. Women are joining the workforce in numbers, whitegoods are readily available and the age of rock’n’roll has arrived.
Allie Manaia works the Elizabeth Arden counter at Smith and Caugheys. It’s been two years since the Dunbar and Jones fire, where some of her friends perished, but she still has nightmares. Kathleen Lawson — rich, lonely and bored — is one of Allie’s customers. Kathleen takes a shine to Allie, but when Kathleen discovers Allie’s husband is Maori, her attitude changes. Is she trying to make friends or poison the relationship between Sonny and Allie? Meanwhile, Sonny’s beautiful younger sister, Polly, is embracing the more relaxed moral standards of the era, living a vibrant, but wayward, life as a waitress–model–goodtime girl, while leaving her young daughter to be raised by her mother. As each woman navigates the shifting social and cultural landscape of the 1950s, she is faced with new possibilities and decisions — with freedom comes joy, but also fear and, occasionally, mistakes. Deborah Challinor is the author of 15 bestselling historical fiction novels, two works of non-fiction and a young adult novel. For the last three years, she has been the number one bestselling author of fiction in New Zealand. In 2018, she was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature and historical research. Deborah has a PhD in history from Waikato University and has taught researching and writing historical fiction at university level for several years.

An ingenious dystopian novel of one young woman’s resistance against the constraints of an oppressive society
When a recklessly idealistic girl in a dystopian future society dares to test the perimeters of her tightly controlled world, she is punished by being sent back in time to a region of North America — ‘Wainscotia, Wisconsin’ — that existed 80 years before. Cast adrift in time in this idyllic Midwestern town, she is set upon a course of ‘rehabilitation’ — but she falls in love with a fellow exile and starts to question the constraints of her new existence, with results that are both devastating and liberating. Arresting and visionary, Hazards of Time Travel is an exquisitely wrought love story, a novel of harrowing discovery — and an oblique, but powerful, response to our current political climate. ‘The most consistently inventive, brilliant, curious and creative writer going’ Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

Fire and Blood: A History of the Targaryen Kings from Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III GEORGE R . R . MART I N
The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work by the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for HBO’s Game of Thrones . Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones , House Targaryen — the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria — took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart. What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel, and featuring more than 80 all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

Non Fiction | December 2018 ABC foreign correspondent Liam Cochrane was on the ground as the dramatic events unfolded. Using his local knowledge and working with a team of Thai researchers, he puts us at the centre of the story, witnessing the boys’ agonising wait, the divers’ battle against muddy torrents, the race to pump out flooded caves, the secret drilling plans and the tensions between some of the strong characters who came to help. He reveals fresh details about the boys’ time inside the cave, the role of a revered mystic monk and the background politics of a kingdom under military rule. Amidst the hope, there were scandals and obstacles. But most of all, this inspirational story shows what can be achieved when the world works together. When the 12 young members of the Wild Boars soccer club walked into a Thai cave with their assistant coach, they expected to be out by nightfall. A birthday cake waited in the fridge for one boy, another had a tutoring class. They had rope and torches but no food. Then a sudden monsoonal downpour flooded the passage. They were trapped, imprisoned in a cave said to be haunted by a mythical broken-hearted princess. So began the greatest search and rescue mission in living memory. People from across Thailand, and soon across the world, joined hands to find the boys and try to get them out.
THE INSIDE STORY OF THE SECRET PLANS AND UNSUNG HEROES THAT HELPED A TEAM OF INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS PULL OFF THE DRAMATIC THAI CAVE RESCUE
Liam Cochrane is the ABC’s Southeast Asia correspondent, based in Bangkok. He spent more than two weeks in Mae Sai covering the cave rescue, one of those weeks stationed outside the cave entrance, in the mud, with daily contact with divers and other key players. Liam began his career in journalism in Cambodia in 2004, as a reporter, then managing editor of the Phnom Penh Post and has worked in radio and print journalism. Before Bangkok, he was posted to Port Moresby, considered the ABC’s toughest correspondent position.

By Sea & Stars: The Story of the First Fleet TR E NT DA LTON
Ed Sheeran S E AN SM I TH
Dazzling, poetic and vivid storytelling from one of Australia’s greatest writers, which tells the bloody, brutal and enthralling story of the epic journey of the First Fleet Originally published as a multi-part serial in The Australian newspaper, By Sea and Stars tells the story of the epic voyage that led to the founding of our nation, as told from the point of view of the people who took part — willingly or unwillingly. Drawing from historical sources of the time, including letters and journals, Trent Dalton brings this epic voyage, and the people who went on it, to vivid life.
Ed Sheeran has conquered the musical world. Avoiding flashy showmanship and fleeting fashion, he has let his talent do the talking. His moving and uplifting songs forge a lasting connection with the millions of people around the world who love his music. Bestselling biographer Sean Smith has travelled to the quiet Suffolk backwater that Ed still calls home. Seeing the sunset over the famous ‘Castle on the Hill’ for himself, Smith
follows in the footsteps of Ed’s amazing journey from the boy who could barely hold a tune to the man who sold out Wembley Stadium.
This is not dry history of dates and names. These are gripping stories of real people, from the lowest to the highest. From terrified nine-year-old chimney sweep and convict John Hudson to conscientious Lieutenant Ralph Clark, pining after his wife and son, to the brave and determined Captain General Arthur Phillip, the brightest star of the British Navy: these are the people who made the voyage, and these are their stories — of death, duty, glory, lust, violence, escape, mutiny — and a great southern land. Trent Dalton is a staff writer for the Weekend Australian Magazine and a former assistant editor of The Courier Mail . He’s a two-time winner of a Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism, a four-time winner of a Kennedy Award for Excellence in NSW Journalism and a four-time winner of the national News Awards Features Journalist of the Year. His debut novel is the critically acclaimed and bestselling Boy Swallows Universe , which was published in mid-2018.
He tells the story of Ed’s remarkable mum and dad, who gave their son the courage and confidence to pursue his dream, the friends and mentors who taught and encouraged him, and the lovers who inspired his most famous songs. Ed Sheeran the book is a fascinating and revealing insight into Ed Sheeran the man … and his music. Sean Smith is the UK’s leading celebrity biographer and the author of six Sunday Times best sellers. His books about the most famous people of our times have been translated throughout the world. His subjects include George Michael, Adele, Kim Kardashian, Tom Jones, Robbie Williams, Kate Middleton, Kylie Minogue, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston.
